About Open Textbooks in B.C.

In October 2012, the BC Ministry of Advanced Education announced its support for the creation of open textbooks for the 40 highest-enrolled first and second year subject areas in the province’s public post-secondary system. BCcampus is tasked with co-ordination of the project because of our 10-year experience funding open educational resources (OER) through the Online Program Development Fund.

The goal of the Open Textbook Project is to provide flexible and affordable access to higher education resources in B.C. by making open textbooks available for use by B.C. faculty, and digital versions of the texts are free of charge to faculty and students. Printed copies are also available on demand for a low cost.

HARNESSING TECHNOLOGY TO MAKE EDUCATION FREE:free and open versions of Flat World Knowledge texts

"Junior Year" by Flckr user amanda_munoz

We are are very pleased to announce that all Flat World Knowledge textbooks published under an open license are permanently and freely available from — free to read, free to download, free to share and remix under a Creative Commons BY-NC-SA 3.0 license.

The Bookshelf will initially provide .pdf and MS Word (.doc, .docx) versions of each book. We are actively building .epub versions, which will begin to appear in the early weeks of 2013, and we will introduce a more sophisticated Bookshelf in early January. We are also taking special care to ensure that our efforts comply with the books’ licensing, and especially that our versions retain the essential qualities of the originals.

Each of the books listed below is freely available for download, online reading, and sharing, under aCreative Commons BY-NC-SA 3.0 license. Please share this link (and the blog post) with your networks to help spread the word!

Like many of you, we have come to rely on the free-to-read versions of the excellent texts at Flat World Knowledge. We’ve woven these books tightly into many of our free online courses, all of which rely on freely-accessible (and preferably openly-licensed) materials. When Flat World Knowledge announced recently that its previously openly-licensed books would not be available for free after January 1st, 2013, we decided to preserve the whole catalog, which we now happily share with you.

We are grateful to Flat World Knowledge for developing such an excellent catalog, and while the versions on the Flat World Knowledge website will no longer be free, the publisher continues to provide its texts at prices significantly lower than standard textbooks and with much added-value in the form of supplementary materials and interactive elements. We encourage you to visit the Flat World Knowledge website and consider the purchase options available there. We also provide links to the site within each book.

In the mean time, we hope to see this Bookshelf flourish. If you have your own remixes or supplementary materials, send them our way.

Initially, we’re providing .pdf and Word (.doc or .docx) formats for each text, and we’ll be rolling out .epub in the coming weeks. A more sophisticated, easier-to-navigate version is also on the way in early 2013…until then, allow us to present…the alphabet:
